Bioanalyst to work on Parkinson’s Disease Biomarker Discovery Project

Turku Centre for Biotechnology is a shared department between the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The unit’s research programs focus on drug discovery and diagnostics and include top-quality groups working on cancer, immunology and neurobiology while providing national infrastructure platforms on proteomics, genomics, imaging and bioinformatics.
The Coffey lab in partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation is launching a project to discover biomarkers for diagnosis and disease monitoring of Parkinson’s disease. Within the scope of this project, the lab invites applications for the position of Bioanalyst for a fixed-term, 1.2.2019 – 31.1.2020, with a possibility for extension. The successful candidate will be responsible for patient blood collection and UPDRS scoring as well sample preparation for mass spectrometry analysis.
Qualifications and terms of employment
The successful candidate must speak Finnish fluently and have a good working knowledge of English. They must have a degree level training in bioanalytical science or related subject. Their formal training must have included acquisition of clinical samples from patients. The successful candidate will gain certification in UPDRS scoring of Parkinson’s disease and learn to isolate blood cells and prepare samples for mass spectrometry screening. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordination of patient visits and taking care of patient sample inventory. You will join our interdisciplinary team with diverse backgrounds in neuroscience, bioinformatics and clinical practice.

to study new regulators of the immune system through single-cell omics in Molecular Systems Immunology Group at Turku Centre for Biotechnology
Our international multidisciplinary research group (https://www.btk.fi/research/molecular-systems-immunology/) led by Academy Professor Riitta Lahesmaa is based at Turku Centre for Biotechnology (the Centre), BioCity Turku, Turku, Finland. We are seeking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher or project researcher with possibility to continue work as a doctoral candidate.
Disorders in immune system and lymphocyte function lead to inflammatory diseases e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes. Project will focus on studying the molecular mechanisms underlying immune mediated diseases aiming at enabling individualized treatment in the future.
Description of recruiting organization
Molecular Systems Immunology group aims at understanding the regulation of human immune system to predict, prevent and treat immune mediated disorders. We study epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of T cells and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases.
Turku Centre for Biotechnology is a joint research institute of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The mission of the Centre is to promote high quality research and training. The Centre has excellent state-of-the-art technology platforms and expertise in single-cell omics, next-generation sequencing, epigenomics, proteomics, computational biology and high-end cell imaging.
The project aims at understanding how novel regulators of immune system, recently discovered by our group, act on a molecular level. We will use cutting-edge single-cell omics tools, i.e. single cell sequencing and mass cytometry. We will collaborate closely with Dr. Tapio Lönnberg, an in-depth expert in single-cell omics and head of our Centre’s single-cell omics facility. Our key collaborator is Research Director Laura Elo and her group, the Medical Bioinformatics Centre, who have developed novel tools to analyses single-cell omics data.
Qualifications, successful candidates have:
- A relevant doctor’s degree (postdoctoral researcher) or a relevant master’s degree (project researcher) e.g. in life sciences or in biomedicine
- High level of motivation, self-initiative and independency
- Excellent team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written)
- First-rate molecular and cell biology knowledge and skills
- Strong publication record in international journals (postdoctoral researcher) at least in one of the following areas: immunology, molecular and cellular biology, autoimmunity, genetics, epigenetics.
The salary is in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5 (postdoctoral researcher) where the work specific salary component is 2 903,61 €/month or levels 3-4 (project researcher), where the work specific salary component is 2 209,17 – 2507,62 €/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on the personal performance, which is, at most, 50% of the base salary. The position starts at earliest on March 1st, 2019 (or as agreed). The positions are initially for two years, one optional year possible. There is a trial period of six months.

Project Researcher or Postdoc Researcher in Biostatistics at Turku Medical Bioinformatics Centre

We are looking for a postdoc or project researcher in Biostatistics as part of our multidisciplinary and international team of experts in the Computational Biomedicine group at the Medical Bioinformatics Centre, Turku Centre for Biotechnology.
The research will be conducted in the context of the ERC project “DynaOmics” under the supervision of Dr. Elo. The DynaOmics project focuses on longitudinal modelling of proteomics data with the ultimate goal to enable dynamic individualized diagnostics (http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/203223_en.html). Additionally, the research involves participation in other national and international research projects ongoing at the Medical Bioinformatics Centre.
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background with proven record in statistics. The candidate should hold a Master’s or PhD degree in a suitable discipline (e.g. statistics, mathematics). Good communication skills in English, both oral and written, are essential. Strong knowledge of biostatistics and proven, previous experience with R, Matlab or other statistical software is required.
