Postdoc or Project Researcher in the Computational Biomedicine Group

We are looking for a postdoc or project researcher as part of our multidisciplinary and international team of experts in the Computational Biomedicine group at the Medical Bioinformatics Centre, Turku Centre for Biotechnology.

The work involves processing and analysis of high-throughput next-generation sequencing data to answer complex biomedical questions. Specific focus areas include, for instance, epigenomics and non-coding RNA. In addition to method development, the work covers implementation and benchmarking of existing tools and workflows.

Qualifications

Suitable candidate should have knowledge of bioinformatics, statistics and R, Matlab or other mathematical/statistical software. She/he should have high level of motivation, self-initiative and independency. We appreciate good team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written). The project grant is for 1-2 years. Starting date is negotiable.

A position for a postdoctoral researcher working in Elo and Lahesmaa Laboratories is open for applications. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist in bioinformatics who is interested in Molecular Systems Immunology, T cell epigenomics and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases. The Medical Bioinformatics Centre and the Computational Biomedicine Group of Research Director Laura Elo (http://elolab.utu.fi/) develops computational data analysis tools and mathematical models for biomedical research, with the eventual goal of improving the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of complex diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. A specific focus is on analysing and interpreting data generated by modern high-throughput biotechnologies, such as deep sequencing and mass-spectrometry proteomics.

Molecular Systems Immunology group (https://www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/lahesmaa/) aims at understanding the regulation of human immune system to predict, prevent and treat immune mediated disorders. We study epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of T cells and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes.

Description of the position to fill

The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects aiming at regulation of immune response in health and immune mediated disorders. These include detection of biomarkers for immune mediated diseases as well as unraveling the underlying molecular mechanisms. She/he will join our multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, biology and medicine.

The work of the postdoctoral researcher involves development and application of computational and statistical methods for the analysis of high-throughput molecular data, with a focus on next generation sequencing data and their combination with other omics data.

The position is for 2 years. Starting date is 1.11.2018 and is negotiable. The salary is in accordance with the universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5-6 where the work specific salary component is 2893,95 – 3374,18 €/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on personal performance, which is at most 46.3% of the base salary. There is a trial period of six months.

Qualifications

Successful applicants have:

  • A relevant Doctoral degree (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics)
  • Scientific publications in high impact international journals
  • Previous experience in next generation sequencing, epigenomic and genomic research and related analysis platforms and tools
  • Experience in R, Matlab or other mathematical/statistical software
  • High level of motivation, self-initiative and independency
  • Excellent team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Previous experience in immunology is considered an advantage
  • International research experience and experience in supervision of students is considered an advantage

Postdoctoral researcher or project researcher to study immunoregulation in Molecular Systems Immunology Group at Turku Centre for Biotechnology

Our international multidisciplinary research group (https://www.btk.fi/research/molecular-systems-immunology/) led by Academy Professor Riitta Lahesmaa is based at Turku Centre for Biotechnology (the Centre), BioCity Turku, Turku, Finland. We are seeking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher or project researcher with possibility to continue work as a doctoral candidate.

Disorders in immune system and lymphocyte function lead to inflammatory diseases e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes. Project will focus on studying the molecular mechanisms underlying immune mediated diseases aiming at enabling individualized treatment in the future.

  • A relevant doctor’s degree (postdoctoral researcher) or a relevant master’s degree (project researcher) e.g. in life sciences or in biomedicine
  • High level of motivation, self-initiative and independency
  • Excellent team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • First-rate molecular and cell biology knowledge and skills with a strong background in epigenetics.
  • Strong publication record in international journals (postdoctoral researcher) at least in one of the following areas: immunology, molecular and cellular biology, autoimmunity, genetics, epigenetics.

Application

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5 (postdoctoral researcher) where the work specific salary component is 2 893,95 €/month or levels 3-4 (project researcher),  where the work specific salary component is 2203,25  2500,06 €/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on the personal performance, which is, at most, 46.3% of the base salary. The position starts at earliest on Nov 1st, 2018 (or as agreed). The positions are initially for two years, one optional year possible. There is a trial period of six months.
